Vanessa Werner - Birth Care
Vanessa, tell us a little bit about your background and experience in the pregnancy, birth, or postpartum field:
I have built up my international career on different layers of maternal health support which started with my studies of the nervous system. I wanted to understand how significant life experiences, trauma and stress impact our health and realised there was no space being held for mothers that provided the safe opportunity for personalised birth preparation and essential healing after birth.
I began to work with women helping them to regulate their nervous systems and to reconnect to their bodies and the spaces within their bodies that may have been connected to abuse, injury, trauma or disease. Many seeking my support were mothers who were finding it hard to feel closure from their birth experience and to move forward with their mental, physical and emotional recovery.
My specialised services in supporting postpartum mothers expanded as I explored how and why the modern-day birth environment is causing so many women to have undesired or traumatic experiences.
To gain a foundational understanding of the spaces and systems women are birthing in, I ultimately needed to walk alongside them - so I became a Doula and immersed myself into studying prenatal education, birth support and innate postpartum traditions while honourably witnessing women as they birthed - at home, in the hospital or a birth centre.
There are many layers to how we need to approach supporting a mother. I observe and listen to the physical, mental and emotional symptoms and use these to work with the root cause of a concern, ailment or imbalance, not just to treat the branches of it. I weave this into my work by looking at all of the puzzle pieces of a woman’s life and how they are contributing to her current state of being.

There is such stigma around pregnancy, birth and postpartum and what women SHOULD be doing, how they SHOULD be feeling or SHOULD be recovering and that can deter most of us from our instincts and intuition when it comes to what we need and our capacity to birth and ultimately care for our children.
Vanessa Werner Birth Care was born from the realisation of the need for a foundational space offering prenatal and postpartum services, alongside creating a wholesome community for mothers. There is currently just so much external ‘noise’ instead of spaces of refuge and acceptance. Vanessa Werner Birth Care is a maternal health hub, to guide you as a mother, to find the resource you seek and the individualised support you deserve.
“I collaborate with mothers, consulting with them throughout their pregnancy with respect to personalised prenatal care and education alongside providing mental and emotional support as they prepare for labour and birth. With a focus on maternal mental health, I also offer birth recovery support and postpartum guidance. My mission is to provide a safe space where you feel validated and empowered in preparation for your baby’s birth alongside finding clarity and closure from your postpartum motherhood experiences.” We need to recenter the mother as the way of birth. Her pregnancy and journey of motherhood is unique to her. There needs to be an investment in the health of current and future generations and it needs to start with realising how important the healing of a mother is within our society.

Through my services, it is my commitment to provide a space for women to rediscover the magic and power of birth - to speak of their fears, their passions, their dreams and to be given the time and validation they need to heal from their experiences. It is my commitment to ensure women receive the support they deserve to help them thrive in their transformation of becoming and being a mother and to see the benefits of all of this in the lives of their babies and families.
Motherhood is a continuum. The years after birth are so formative, what happens in labour and birth all impacts how a woman becomes a mother and goes through into this new life experience and cares for her babies. I’m always working to hold that needed space that validates women of their transition into motherhood and speaks to the importance of recognising the important rite of passage they journey through. This kind of support shouldn’t have to be searched for, it should be readily available and expected for each and every mother.
