Postpartum Isn’t a Deadline - It’s a Phase. And Your Body Still Needs You
Written by expert Arti, Certified Nutrition Consultant from Nourish Me Mama
There’s this unspoken timeline that so many of us feel ticking in the background after we give birth. The idea that by six weeks, we should be “healed,” “recovered,” and “back to ourselves” after that six-week post-birth checkup.
But the truth? Postpartum isn’t a deadline. It’s a deeply transformative phase physically, emotionally, and mentally - and it deserves time, care, and patience.
As a mama who’s lived through the messy middle of postpartum and now supports other women through it, I want to tell you something important:
You don’t have to rush your recovery.
There’s no gold star for bouncing back. What matters is how you feel in your body, how nourished you are, and how supported you feel in your journey — even months or years after giving birth.
Let’s Redefine Postpartum
Postpartum is not just the first six weeks. It’s the months (and honestly, years) of rebalancing your hormones, rebuilding nutrient stores, adjusting to life with a baby, and learning how to care for yourself again.
I work with mamas every day who are still navigating exhaustion, brain fog, low moods, or nutrient depletion well beyond those early weeks — and that’s completely normal. Just because your check-up says you're "cleared" doesn’t mean you're done healing.
Why Long-Term Nourishment Matters
During pregnancy, your body gives so much to grow your baby — and after birth, it continues giving through breastfeeding, sleepless nights, and emotional energy.
You need real, consistent nourishment to replenish what’s been lost and sustain your energy, mood, and hormones for the long haul.
Here are a few ways to support your body post-birth — no matter where you’re at in your journey:
- Eat warm, easy-to-digest meals — stewed fruits, soups, slow-cooked meats, dal, and porridges are gentle on digestion and packed with nutrients your body actually absorbs.
- Prioritise iron and protein — eggs, lentils, chicken, bone broth, and leafy greens cooked in ghee or olive oil support tissue repair, energy, and mood.
- Stay hydrated — herbal teas, warm lemon water, or coconut water can make a real difference in how you feel day to day.
- Nourish your mind, too — mood shifts are real. If you’re feeling low, anxious, or overwhelmed, please reach out — it’s a sign of strength, not weakness. Your mental wellbeing matters. Try taking a short walk outside, journaling your thoughts, or simply talking to someone you trust. And if things feel heavy, know that help is always available — you’re not alone.
- You Matter Too, Mama
I know how easy it is to give every bit of yourself to your baby — to be the one holding it all together, even when you’re running on empty. But your wellbeing isn’t optional. It’s the foundation for everything else.
You can’t keep showing up if you’re constantly running on fumes — and you shouldn’t have to. Please don’t be afraid to ask for help. Needing support doesn’t make you weak — it makes you human.
Taking care of yourself is mothering. It’s not selfish. It’s necessary.
Whether you’re in the fog of the early weeks, chasing toddlers around, or still processing birth months later — your postpartum journey is still valid. It still matters.
You brought life into this world. And your body, mind, and heart still need you. You deserve to be held, nourished, and deeply supported — every step of the way.
