How to Embrace the First 40 days Postpartum

How to Embrace the First 40 days Postpartum

Embracing the first forty days postpartum can be an empowering practice. Here are some ways to fully embrace this transformative period!

Remember, It’s a personal and individual journey. Trust your instincts, listen to your body, and allow yourself the time and space to heal, grow, and thrive. By embracing this transformative period with love, compassion, and self-care, you will set the foundation for an empowered postpartum experience 💗

Acknowledge the importance:

Recognise the significance of the first forty days after childbirth. This time is crucial for your physical recovery, emotional well-being, and bonding with your baby. Understanding the value of this period will help you prioritise self-care and create space for healing.

Seek support:

Surround yourself with your village. Get meal trains happening from friends and whānau. Join local mum groups, or connect with other new mamas online. Sharing your experiences, seeking advice, and finding solidarity will help you navigate this journey with confidence and empowerment.

Let go of expectations:

Release any pressure to "bounce back" or conform to societal expectations. Embrace the fact that your body has just accomplished an INCREDIBLE feat and deserves time to heal and recover. Allow yourself to rest, both physically and mentally, without judgment or comparison.

Prioritise Self-care:

Carve out some time for self-care every day. Cue, Viva La Vulva products! Whether it's a warm healing bath with our Healing Bath Soak, some gentle stretching, meditation, or simply enjoying a cuppa. Find activities that nourish your mind, body, and spirit. Remember, self-care is not selfish but essential for your well-being and ability to care for your baby.

Embrace Nurturing Rituals:

Incorporate nurturing rituals into your daily routine. This could include gentle massages (cue, baby daddy/partner/support person!), using our soothing postpartum care products, practicing mindfulness, or fueling your body with nutritious meals. These rituals can help you connect with your incredible body, honour your journey, and foster a sense of self-love, mama!

Set boundaries:

It's okay to say no and establish boundaries during this time. Protect your energy and prioritise your needs and the needs of your baby. Allow yourself to step back from commitments and focus on rest, recovery, and bonding with your little one.

Celebrate Milestones:

Celebrate the little wins during this period, mama! Whether it's your first outing with your baby, successfully breastfeeding (because, OUCH!), or simply surviving the day, acknowledge and celebrate these achievements. Celebrating your progress will boost your confidence and help create a positive mindset.

Embrace the slow:

Focus on the present moment, challenges, and growth that come with the first forty days postpartum. How good is that newborn bubble?! Allow yourself to go through every emotion you find yourself in. Mindfulness can help you appreciate the journey and calm those creeping feelings of overwhelm.

and remember - you’ve got this, mama!

"If you are reading this, know this. You are not failing. Not because you’re tired. Not because you use formula. Not because you ask for help. You are doing an amazing job, even if your version of motherhood looks less like a storybook and more like a 6am drive-through run for a hash brown." - Lexi

"I had so many expectations about birth. Every movie, every story made it seem like this huge, magical moment, the kind where you instantly fall in love, the bond is immediate, and everything just *clicks*...."

“I gave myself all the permission I had to rest and take it easy.
Letting others do simple things like emptying the dishwasher or hanging out the washing was mentally hard but I truly believe that rest set up a strong foundation for the rest of my first year postpartum.”

Stana shares with us her honest experience recovering from a belly birth, with scar massage, unexpected sensitivities, baby-wearing aches, and the strength it took to actually stop and let herself heal.

If you're in the thick of it or reflecting on your own journey, her story is a powerful reminder: rest is not a luxury, it’s essential.
