Michelle McSweeny - Nutritionist Women's Health and Hormones

I'm Michelle, a registered Functional Clinical Nutritionist specialising in women's health and hormones

I have a long history in healthcare having been a dentist for ten years which overlapped the beginning of my career in nutrition and eventually, I retrained and qualified as a Holistic Clinical Nutritionist because it was where my passion lay.

My own journey of severe sickness during pregnancy and postpartum depletion 1 year later, led me on a journey beyond conventional nutrition and I discovered the power that nutrition, lifestyle, mindset and behaviours has on our hormones as women and mums, our fertility and our health.
I started focusing all my research and postgraduate functional nutrition training on women's health and hormones and why our physical and mental health can suffer so badly as mums and what we can do to prevent and treat it. I had to learn to advocate more for my own health as a mum as unfortunately it is not done for us.

When I had postpartum depletion and felt so ill and weak it took me a while to realise this couldn’t be the norm for women after they had children. I was exhausted, fatigued, foggy-brained, had periods from hell, low mood and constant illness.... Not exactly the vision of motherhood I had in mind but although this is a common picture, it is not normal.

Knowing what I know now there is so much more I could’ve done to prevent this and understand why this was happening but as women we aren’t educated enough about how our bodies change at this time and what we need during pregnancy and postpartum to keep us healthy and well.  It is difficult to live our lives to the fullest as mums when we are running on empty and constantly managing health conditions or exhaustion. So much emphasis is put on the baby's well being and needs, which is amazing but everyone knows a healthy, happy mum makes for a healthy, happy baby so mamas need that level of education and support too.

This led me to doing my own research and digging deep and I was amazed at learning about my body, listening to its signals & learning how to manage my health, helped reverse my symptoms & be able to gain my health back.

I now help mums who aren’t feeling as great as they want to be and they haven’t found answers elsewhere or  when they are in the in-between - they may not have a diagnosed “disease” but they also don't feel as healthy as they could be and want to get to the bottom of why they feel this way. I help them realise their symptoms are not just in their head or that they have to live with them, but that there are more options.

I'm on a mission of guiding other mums to understand their body & support optimal health, hormones & fertility so they can enjoy motherhood and get the most out of their days without symptoms holding them back..
I educate and support other mums to reconnect to their body and listen to its signals, connect to the food  they eat and  learn to nourish their bodies, and create a healthy lifestyle that makes them feel good. In turn I hope that will pass on to future generations, who will understand their bodies better and how to optimise their health & healing

In my online clinic I can use blood, hormone and gut testing with analysis of your symptoms & listening to your story, health history, diet & lifestyle to get to the root causes of symptoms. I use evidence-based food as medicine, supplements, lifestyle & mindset strategies to manage & resolve symptoms of hormonal imbalance & depletion for women, moms and moms to be.

    Stana's Postpartum Unfiltered

“I gave myself all the permission I had to rest and take it easy.
Letting others do simple things like emptying the dishwasher or hanging out the washing was mentally hard but I truly believe that rest set up a strong foundation for the rest of my first year postpartum.”

Stana shares with us her honest experience recovering from a belly birth, with scar massage, unexpected sensitivities, baby-wearing aches, and the strength it took to actually stop and let herself heal.

If you're in the thick of it or reflecting on your own journey, her story is a powerful reminder: rest is not a luxury, it’s essential.

I'm much better at embracing my body after my 2nd baby. Just letting go of a lot of expectations and trying to enjoy the smaller things and not forcing myself to do anything just to conform to society.

    Amber's Postpartum Unfiltered

The worst thing about the postpartum days for me was the wondering when I’d ever get “Amber” back. The best part was finally accepting that “Amber” is everything she always was, but now she’s also a mother - which is the hardest/greatest/most terrifying adventure she’s been on yet..
