The Best Postpartum Care Products in New Zealand (According to the Mamas Who've Used Them)

The Best Postpartum Care Products in New Zealand (According to the Mamas Who've Used Them)

We're a little biased — obviously. But we're also the brand that started because our founder watched her best friend go through birth and couldn't find a single thing in New Zealand designed to actually support her recovery. So she made it herself.

When we say these are the products Kiwi mamas actually reach for after birth, we mean it in the most literal sense: these are the things that get used, reordered, gifted, and recommended in the mum groups at 2 am.

Here's what each one does, when you need it, and why it's worth having before you give birth — not after.

The Healing Perineal Spray, the one that started it all

If you only get one thing, get this one.

The Healing Perineal Spray is VLV's original product and still the most reached-for thing in the range. Witch hazel, calendula, and hypericum — three botanicals that, between them, reduce inflammation, soothe swelling, support tissue repair, and keep healing skin calm. It sprays upside down (which matters more than you'd think when you're trying to reach your own perineum on no sleep), and it's the thing most mamas use after every single bathroom trip in those first weeks.

It works after vaginal birth and belly birth. It's not stingy. It goes in the fridge for extra relief if you want. And the number of mamas who've said they wish they'd had it with their first baby is the whole reason we exist.

Best for: everyone, from day one.

The Peri Wash Bottle — the bathroom game changer

The Peri Wash Bottle is the thing you didn't know you needed until you used it and then couldn't imagine postpartum without it.

Fill it with warm water, start squeezing before you wee, keep going throughout. The warm water dilutes urine before it touches healing skin — that's where the sting relief comes from. Add a few drops of Good Witch Hazel to the water, and you've got a cooling, anti-inflammatory rinse doing its thing every single bathroom trip.

Most hospitals give you a basic one. It's worth having your own that you pack in your hospital bag and bring home — the right angle makes a real difference, and having it ready to go means one less thing to sort out when you're running on no sleep and everything hurts.

Best for: vaginal birth recovery, especially the first two weeks. Also genuinely useful after belly birth for comfort during lochia.

The Good Witch Hazel — the ingredient that does everything

Good Witch Hazel is witch hazel distilled in small batches right here in New Zealand, specifically for postpartum use. That distinction matters — the pharmacy shelf stuff is often so diluted it's barely doing anything. This one is the real thing.

Use it in your peri bottle. Squeeze a few drops onto a pad before freezing for a DIY padsicle. Add it to a warm sitz bath. Dab it directly on haemorrhoids (bum grapes — we're not going to pretend they don't exist). It's anti-inflammatory, cooling, and genuinely supports healing wherever it's applied.

It's also the base ingredient in the Healing Perineal Spray, the Padsicle Gel, and the Healing Bath Soak — because when something works this well, you put it in everything.

Best for: adding to your peri bottle, padsicles, sitz baths, or anywhere things are swollen and sore.

Padsicle Gel — cooling comfort that actually heals

Padsicles have been a postpartum staple for years — you squeeze botanical gel onto a maternity pad, freeze it, and use it in place of a regular pad for cooling relief in those first days. The problem with the DIY version is the ingredients are always a guess.

Padsicle Gel takes the guesswork out. Witch hazel, aloe vera, calendula, and hypericum — all at the right concentration for healing postpartum skin, all specifically formulated for tissue with stitches and tears. Freeze the pads for extra cooling or use the gel straight from the bottle at room temperature. One tube makes around twenty pads.

The cooling is what you notice first. The healing is what's happening underneath it.

Best for: the first three to five days when swelling and soreness are most intense, then as needed after that.

Perineal Power Ice Packs — for when you need proper cold therapy

The Perineal Power Ice Packs are reusable gel bead packs contoured to actually fit the perineal area — not a flat hospital ice brick or a bag of frozen peas. They come with soft washable sleeves so the cold isn't going directly on delicate skin, and you freeze two and rotate them so there's always one ready.

Once the acute postpartum phase is over, they become period pain packs, headache relief, muscle soreness after returning to exercise. One of the most used things in the range long past postpartum.

Best for: the first week of recovery for swelling and perineal discomfort. Also useful after belly birth for incision comfort — use chilled not frozen, with a cloth barrier.

The Healing Bath Soak — for when you can actually have a bath

You can't have a full tub bath straight after birth — most midwives say to wait at least 24 to 48 hours after vaginal birth, and around six weeks after a belly birth to avoid infection risk. But when you can, the Healing Bath Soak is worth having ready.

Epsom salts, witch hazel, hypercal tincture, lavender, rose petals — it's not just nice, it's doing something. Epsom salts support muscle recovery and help ease general postpartum aching. The hypercal blend is the same anti-inflammatory, wound-supportive botanical that's in the healing spray. A warm bath with this in it is fifteen minutes of actual therapeutic recovery.

It also doubles as a sitz bath option — a small sitz bowl on the toilet seat is an earlier alternative for mamas who can't do a full bath yet but need the botanical soaking benefits sooner.

Best for: from a few days postpartum (sitz bath) or when you get midwife clearance for a full bath. And honestly — any hard day in the fourth trimester.

B(.)( .)B Balm — for breastfeeding mamas

Nobody tells you your nipples are going to need their own recovery plan. The B(.)( .)B Balm is a natural nipple balm safe for mama and baby — no need to wipe off before feeding. Calendula, shea butter, beeswax, vitamin E. Apply between feeds when things are sore, cracked, or just asking for a bit of care.

This one tends to get passed around — mamas who've used it recommend it to every pregnant friend they have.

Best for: breastfeeding mamas, from the first feed. Also works as a general balm for dry skin, nappy rash, and pretty much anything that needs a bit of gentle healing.

The bundles — if you want everything sorted in one go

If you want to build a proper postpartum kit without making twelve separate decisions, the bundles are the easiest way to do it.

The Labour of Love — Everything you need for the hospital. A birth comb, clary sage roller, Peri Wash Bottle, Healing Spray and Witch Hazel. Just add some nappies and youre good to go!

Fan(ny) Faves Bundle — Healing Perineal Spray, Peri Wash Bottle, and Good Witch Hazel. The bathroom recovery trio, bundled. If you're only doing one thing to prepare for postpartum, this is it.

The Revival Kit — the full recovery kit including peri bottle, healing spray, padsicle gel, ice packs, breasties, bath soak, and boob balm. Everything, in one box, ready to go.

The Motherload — the full range including everything in the Revival Kit plus pregnancy and birth prep products. The one for a first-time mama who wants to be properly prepared from third trimester through the fourth.

When to buy this stuff

Before you give birth. Ideally by 36 weeks.

The most common thing we hear from mamas is that they wish they'd had everything ready before birth rather than trying to figure it out in those first hazy days at home. You won't be in a position to research, order, and wait for delivery when you're on day three with a newborn and everything hurts.

Pack the hospital bag with the peri bottle, healing spray, padsicle gel, and witch hazel. Have the ice packs in the freezer before you go into labour. Have the bath soak in the cupboard ready for when you get clearance. And if you're giving this as a gift — buy it before the baby arrives, not after.

Frequently asked questions

What postpartum care products do I actually need in New Zealand?
At minimum: a peri wash bottle, healing perineal spray, and witch hazel for bathroom recovery. Add padsicle gel and ice packs for the first few days of swelling and soreness. A healing bath soak for when you get clearance. The Fan(ny) Faves Bundle covers the essentials in one go.

Are VLV products safe after a belly birth?
Yes — most of the range works for both vaginal and belly birth recovery. The healing spray and witch hazel can be used on incision sites once the bandage has been removed and you have LMC clearance. The ice packs are useful chilled (not frozen) with a cloth barrier on the incision.

When should I buy postpartum care products?
By 36 weeks if possible. Have everything ready before you go into labour so it's waiting for you when you get home — you genuinely won't have the bandwidth to sort it out in those first days.

Are VLV products natural?
Yes — the range is natural, vegan, free from parabens and synthetic fragrances, and made or formulated in New Zealand. Everything is pregnancy, mama, and baby safe.

Can I use these products while breastfeeding?
Yes. The range is specifically formulated to be safe during breastfeeding. The B(.)( .)B Balm is designed for use on nipples and is safe for babies.

Postpartum care isn't a luxury. It's the thing that makes the difference between white-knuckling the fourth trimester and actually recovering from it.

You've done the prep for the birth. Do the prep for what comes after. 💗
